Suzan Hughes-Kennedy (artist, art coach), Lillian Jay Neal (art teacher at Snyder JHS), and Rhonda Wilks (portrait artist, private art lessons) are April’s Artists of the Month at the County-City Library. All three are Prophetic Artists, with the bulk of their work centering on religion.
Suzan, of Sweetwater, rediscovered painting after 16 years of teaching art. She specialized in ceramics, but has since branched out into acrylic and water color. A few years ago, she experienced a spiritual renewal that released her creativity and led to her painting experiences at church as a prophetic artist. She has been influenced by Georgia O’Keefe and the Hudson River Valley paintings.
Lillian, of Sweetwater, has been working with water color and mixed media for about six years. She took art classes in college and took water color classes in Abilene. She also taught in Sweetwater for 26 years. Her pastor encouraged her to look into Prophetic Art, which she says is more rewarding to do than anything else. Lillian also makes hand-painted silk scarves. She sells her art, with all funding going to missions. Her website is drawinginhispresense.blogspot.com.
Rhonda, of Sweetwater, is a self taught artist that has been doing portraits since the age of 11. She works with mixed media. Her portraits are done in pencils and pastels. She has been giving private art lessons for children from her home for the past three years. Rhonda also sells her artwork from her office — Sierra Satellite — at 1209 Lamar Street.
