Sweetwater had track athletes with top-three finishes in five events at the District 5-3A meet which ended Thursday in Abilene. As a result, those athletes be heading to Lubbock later this month for regional competition.
On the boys side, Sweetwater’s Nick Nemir qualified in three events as he placed third in the 100 dash (10.88) and the 300 hurdles (40.31) and also ran a leg on the 4 x 200 relay that placed third (1:33.70). The other relay runners were Sam Nemir, who is Nick’s brother, along with Kaleb Hoover and Ryan Linebaugh.
The Sweetwater girls will be represented by Claire Williams and Des-tiny Osteen, who qualified in the shot put with a 2-3 finish. Williams’ second-place throw went 34-8 1/2 and Osteen threw 34-4 to place third. Also competing in the event was Alicia Finn, who placed sixth (33-6 1/2). Finn also just missed joining Nick Nemir as a repeat regional qualifier from 2011 as she placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 99-0.
Placing fifth were the girls’ 400 relay (53.42) and the boys’ 400 relay (44.57), as well as Hoover in the high jump (5-10). Placing sixth for the girls were Kendra Crosson in the 200 dash (26.63) and Kathleen Campbell in the high jump (4-8) as well as the triple jump.
