After a wait of 15 years — plus a 1 1/2-week break since ending its regular season — Sweetwater’s softball team returns to the playoffs when it plays Iowa Park in a Class 3A bi-district matchup at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
The winner of the one-game playoff in Graham will face Burleson Centennial in the area round next week. Sweetwater, which is mak-ing only its third postseas-on appearance in school history and first since 1997, comes in with a 15-11 record and finished third in District 5-3A with a 4-4 record.
The Lady Mustangs hav-en’t played since April 17, but Sweetwater coach Bob-by Williams said his team has been working hard and is ready for Iowa Park.
“I think their pitching is probably a lot like what we saw in district,” he said. “We should be able to hit them. They try to play a little small ball, so we’ll have to play good defense.
“Our girls are pretty used to (having extra time off). I wish we could have played on Tuesday, but they’ll be ready to go once they take the field. It’s been that way for us all year.”
Sweetwater starts only two seniors, shortstop Kinsey Browning and first baseman Alicia Finn. However, the Lady Mustangs have hit a robust .369 as a team and four players — outfielder Kelsi Crosson (.453), third baseman Claire Williams (.448), second baseman Suede Shirley (.434) and outfielder Megan Holsey (.422) are hitting over .400. Kelsi Crosson’s twin sister Kendra Crosson — who also is a starting outfielder — is hitting .397. The team’s starting pitcher will be Maty Montgomery, who has a 13-9 record this season.
