Last week auditions were held for Drum Majors of the Sweetwater Mighty Mustang Band. Students turned in teacher references, wrote essays and memorized a piece of music with which they demonstrated their conducting technique. Two students were selected to lead the 2012 marching band.
Senior Laura Duclos was selected Head Drum Major. Laura is an All-Region euphonium player, who has also advanced to the UIL State Solo & Ensemble Contest on her brass quartet this spring. Laura was the 2011 vice-president and assistant drum major of the Mustang Band. She was also 1st runner-up and talent winner in the 2012 Miss Snake Charmer Pageant. She takes honors and dual-credit courses and maintains a high grade average. Laura’s parents are Margarita and David Duclos.
Junior Crysten Ivy was selected Assistant Drum Major. Crysten is a TMEA All-State clarinetist. She was also winner of the Dallas Director’s Choice Music Festival’s Outstanding Soloist Award this spring. Crysten advanced to the UIL State Solo Contest on both her solo and her ensemble. She is also a member of the SHS Choir and Pop Sensations. Crysten has been a member of Student Council and FCCLA. She is currently taking all honors courses and maintains an A average overall. Her parents are Chris and Sonya Ivy.
Both Drum Majors will conduct the marching band at football games, marching contests and pep rallies. They will also both perform on their instruments in various capacities throughout the marching season. The Award-winning band completed a “perfect season” of first divisions at every competition in 2011-2012. The 2012 Marching Show, titled “Nerves of Steel”, will feature music and scenes depicting actions in competition, in entertainment, and in real life, that truly take “Nerves of Steel”.
