Rookie free agent Joseph Banyard, a running back who starred at Sweetwater and the University of Texas-El Paso, inked a three-year contract this past week with his second National Football League team, the New Orleans Saints.
Banyard also participated on a tryout basis in the Saints’ minicamp that was held from June 5-7 in New Orleans.
Following his transfer from Texas Christian where he initially committed, Banyard spent his final two years of college eligibility at Texas-El Paso where he rushed for a total of 1,490 yards with 14 touchdowns.
As a senior in 2011, Banyard rushed for 867 yards with six touch-downs on 127 carries to go with 12 receptions for 67 yards.
Banyard gets a second shot at the NFL after he was originally signed to a contract by the Jacksonville Jaguars following the NFL draft. He made it through Jacksonville’s rookie mini-camp after signing April 28 as an undrafted free agent, but he was waived on May 15.
