Two Sweetwater Little League all-star teams have advanced to the District 5 elimination round and will play semifinal games in Abilene today, while a third local team narrowly missed joining them.
Sweetwater’s 11-12 year-olds advanced by shutting out Merkel 6-0 in their final pool game to finish with a 2-1 record, and join the three pool winners as as a wild card entry after having the lowest runs-allowed per inning ratio of the pool runnerups.
Sweetwater will play Abilene Eastern at 8 p.m. at Abilene’s Dixie Park. Today’s winner will play for the championship at Abilene’s Will Hair Park at 8 p.m. Thursday, meeting either Snyder or Wylie — who play at 6 p.m. today.
Sweetwater’s Junior League (13-14) all-stars play their semifinal at 6 p.m. today against Abilene North with the game at Abilene North. Like the 11-12 year-olds, the Junior Leaguers advanced after finishing second in their pool. Two other teams also had 1-2 records, but Sweetwater advanced to the semifinals by having a lower runs-allowed per inning ratio than either Wylie or Abilene Eastern.
If Sweetwater wins to-day, it plays the winner of the other semifinal between Abilene South and Snyder for the championship at the Wylie park at 7 p.m. Thursday.
