According to Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda, a body was found along Interstate 20 inside of the Sweetwater city limits.
At 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012, the Sweetwater Police Department received a call from Texas Department of Transportation contracted workers about a body they found while cleaning along Interstate 20. The body was in the median near mile marker 242.
Chief Frieda stated that before their arrival, the police department contacted the Texas Rangers about the body found and Ranger Philip Vandygriff was sent to lead the team in the collection of evidence and photographing the scene.
"The body was in a severe state of decomposition," stated Chief Frieda. "The age, gender, race or cause of death were not able to be determined on scene due to the state the body was in. The body will be sent to Lubbock on Friday for an autopsy to hopefully identify the person, determine cause of death and other things we need answers to."
Sweetwater Police Department detectives are working in conjunction with the Texas Rangers, along with other entities including the Nolan County Sheriff's Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
