Three Sweetwater Mid-dle School football teams began their 2012 season Thursday at Breckenridge. Their results follow:
Breckenridge 42, 8th grade Red 14
Sweetwater Red scored on a 10-yard touchdown run by Javier Olguin in the third quarter and a 10-yard touchdown run by Hunter Mobley in the fourth quarter. Jacoby Hunt converted the PAT following Mobley’s run.
On defense, Olguin had a fumble recovery.
“We had a lot of first game jitters,” said SMS coordinator Tony Cortez, “and just never seemed to get it going. We had lots of mistakes, but they can all be fixed. We look forward to making the necessary adjustments and get ready for the next game.”
Breckenridge 30, 7th-8th White 12
Elijah Escobedo scored both of Sweetwater’s TDs on runs of 2 and 75 yards. Also, Escobedo and Devin Brown had runs of 70 and 65 yards, respectively.
Escobedo and Alex Kit-tley had fumble recoveries and other defense stand-outs were Thomas Mesta (big hit on kickoff), Trist-en Vasquez, Reggie Wal-ker and Garrett Davison.
Cortez said everyone on the combined seventh and eighth grade team had fun and got playing time.
7th grade Red 18, Breckenridge 0
Kiante McCoy scored on 5- and 7-yard touchdown runs and Michael Green finished the scoring with a 70-yard punt return, while the defense had a complete game shutout. Both of McCoy’s scores came in the opening half.
McCoy, Green and Dan-iel Avila had fumble rec-overies, and McCoy had a peelback block on Green’s 70-yard punt return.
“It was a great way to start the season, but we still saw some things that we needed to improve on,” Cortez said. “But overall it was a great team effort and a total team win.”
