Sweetwater and Snyder are renewing their athletic rivalry at two venues today as the volleyball and foot-ball teams will be involved in district competition today at the Sweetwater High School gyms and Mustang Bowl, respectively.
Volleyball action begins at 5 p.m., when the varsity and freshman teams play their District 4-3A matches at separate gyms followed by the junior varsity teams’ match at 6:30. The varsity and JV teams will play at the new gym, according to Sweetwater head volleyball coach Liz Miller. But the traffic between Crane and Ragland streets won’t be confined to the two gyms.
The District 4-3A football opener between Snyder and Sweetwater begins at 7:30 p.m., and this year’s matchup could be a real shootout.
Both teams will be trying to get district play started off on the right foot after going 2-3 in non-district action. Sweetwater has a 36-25-1 lead in the all-time series, but Snyder has won the last three games by lopsided margins.
Both teams have talented quarterbacks. Sweetwater’s Kaegan Jeffrey has comple-ted 54 of 101 passes for a total of 712 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. Snyder quarterback Brandon Davis is 43-of-83 passing for 534 yards and six TDs and also has 728 yards rushing.
This is the first of two volleyball-football doubleheaders in 2012, as Sweetwater and Midland Greenwood will do the same thing here Oct. 19. Sweetwater brings a 2-4 record into today’s vol-leyball match while Snyder is still winless at 0-6, and the Lady Mustangs need a win to keep their fading playoff hopes alive.
