With a mere three weeks left in the regular season, all four high school teams in Nolan County will finally be playing the games that really matter — the ones involving other teams in their districts — starting today.
Sweetwater and Roscoe are well into their district schedules, and both have important games in District 4-3A and District 7-1A, Div-ision II, respectively, that they may need to win in order to remain viable contenders for the state playoffs that will begin next month. Sweetwater (1-1) goes to Big Spring (0-2), while Roscoe (2-2) is also on the road at Gorman (1-3) today.
Highland and Blackwell will start district today after seven non-district games and an open date last week. Highland (5-2) is at Rotan (0-7) for their District 7, Division I six-man opener, while Blackwell (3-4) will host Robert Lee (6-1) in the teams’ kickoff to District 8, Division II six-man action.
Sweetwater is currently in a four-way tie for second place with Greenwood, Monahans and Snyder in 4-3A while Roscoe current-ly sits fourth out of the eight teams in District 7-1A, Division II. The top three teams make the playoffs in Class 3A and 1A. Sweetwater trails only Wylie (2-0) in 4-3A, but Roscoe trails Alb-any, Cross Plains and Ham-lin — all 4-0 — in 7-1A.
Highland enters its dis-trict opener against Rotan with a five-game winning streak, beating Blackwell 54-22 in its most recent game two weeks ago, after starting the year 0-2.
