Sweetwater High School’s basketball teams made the short trip to Merkel on Tuesday and lost both ends of their doubleheader.
Merkel girls 55, Sweetwater girls 19
Merkel, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, defeated Sweet-water (7-6) for the second time in five days. The Lady Badgers won 47-33 when the teams met last Friday at Ballinger’s three-day tour-nament in a game Sweetwa-ter led at halftime. But it was never a contest this time as Merkel (14-0) led 14-4, 31-8 and 45-12 at the breaks.
Kendra Crosson had nine points for Sweetwater while Janell Walker scored three, Kelsi Crosson and Kathleen Campbell two and Kayla Chowning, Hayley Brown-low and Taylor McPherson one. The Lady Mustangs play Coahoma in their first game of Stanton’s three-day tournament at 3 p.m. on Thursday when they return to action.
Merkel boys 71, Sweetwater boys 58
The Merkel boys pulled away late to defeat Sweet-water (2-4) in the nightcap of the doubleheader. The Badgers led just 50-46 at the end of three quarters.
Dylan Bennett scored 14 points to pace Sweetwater, while Michael Hunt and Isaiah McGee contributed 12 apiece.
Also scoring were Rhett Torres with nine points, Quentin Wetsel with six and Trey Taylor with five.
Sweetwater will take on Sands at 1:30 p.m. on Thurs-day in its first game of the three-day Stanton boys basketball tournament.
