Donations to the 31st annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive have been phenomenal, and thousands of families in the Ark-La-Tex will receive food this year from the effort.
Brookshire Grocery Co. stores collect food and partner with many service organizations, food pantries, school groups and other volunteers to help needy families before Christmas, including the Sweetwater Goodfellows, providing food and toys to families with children and individuals in need during the Christmas season.
Approximately 150 Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods stores have accepted donations of non-perishable items since mid-November.
Many stores have also sold “grab-bags” containing an assortment of Food Club staples. Customers can continue to help by purchasing grab-bags to the drive or by dropping individual non-perishable items into the designated bin located inside the store.
All contributions will go to the food drive in the community in which the food is donated.
BGC donates specially-designed boxes in which partnering volunteer groups pack the food, as well as a coupon for a free hen to go with each full box of food handed out before Christmas.
Many stores also sold $1 and $5 scan coupons in November. These proceeds will all go to the food drive in the community in which they were collected.
Partnering volunteers in each area gather, sort, box, and distribute the food to needy families, along with the free hen coupon from BGC.
Distribution dates vary in each area, but most stores will stop collecting by December 19, in order for volunteers to complete the distribution process before Christmas.
“We thank the many individuals who, behind the scenes, diligently go about the work of helping their neighbors in need,” said BGC President and CEO Rick Rayford. “We appreciate everyone who has contributed to make the food drive possible this year.”
