ANSON — After enjoying a nine-day holiday break, the Sweetwater boys basketball team won its first three games at Anson’s three-day tournament to move over .500 for the season.
Sweetwater (8-7) opened the tournament on Thursday by getting pool-play wins over Roby (59-36) and Sey-mour (45-38) before completing pool play on Friday when the Mustangs topped Christoval, 56-49.
Sweetwater was to play Merkel, the other pool-play winner, on Saturday to end the tournament.
In Sweetwater’s game against Roby, Dylan Bennett and Kaleb Hoover paced the Mustangs’ victory by scoring 17 and 16 points, respectively. Trey Taylor scored eight, Rhett Torres seven, Michael Hunt and Isaiah McGee four and Deandre Gatson three. Against Seymour, Hoover and Hunt had 11 and 10, respectively, while Bennett scored seven, McGee six, Taylor five and Gatson, Torres and Sean Morrow two. Bennett scored 21 points and Hoover was right behind with 20 in Friday’s victory over Christoval while also scoring were Gatson with four, Torres and Jack Poe with three, Hunt and McGee with two and Quentin Wetsel with one. Sweetwater and Merkel both finished with 3-0 records in pool play.
