SLATON — The Sweetwater girls basketball team picked up pool-play wins over Tahoka and Petersburg on the first two days of action before suffering their first loss Friday when they fell to host Slaton, 49-32, at the West Texas Invitational Tournament.
On Thursday, Sweetwater (14-8) opened play by defeating Tahoka 52-30.
Kendra Crosson had 15 points to pace the win while Kelsi Crosson and Suede Shirley had eight, Kathleen Campbell six, Shelby Cason and Taylor McPherson four, Hayley Brownlow three and Kayla Chowning and Elise Lawrence two. Sweetwater beat Petersburg 48-33 as Shirley had 13, Kelsi Crosson 10, Kendra Crosson seven, Campbell six, Cason four, Brownlow and Lawrence three and McPherson two. Kelsi and Kendra Crosson each scored nine points for the Lady Mustangs vs. Slaton while also scoring were Cason with six points, Campbell with four and Shirley and Lawrence with two apiece. The loss to Slaton ended Sweetwater’s five-game winning streak and was just its second in nine games. Sweetwater was scheduled to end the tournament on Saturday when teams from all three pools were paired against each other according to their records over the first two days. Sweetwater will then take a six-day break before starting District 4-3A play on Friday, when the Lady Mustangs are scheduled to travel to Big Spring.
