Kaleb Hoover scored 16 points, Rhett Torres 13 and Dylan Bennett 11 as Sweet-water won the championship of Anson’s tournament by defeating Merkel 61-53 on Saturday.
Sweetwater (9-7) finished 4-0 at the tournament and has won its last five games overall. The Mustangs, who host Coahoma on Thursday, placed both Hoover and Bennett on the all-tournament team while avenging a 13-point loss to Merkel in early December.
Sweetwater also got nine points from Michael Hunt, eight points from Isaiah McGee and two points by Quentin Wetsel and Trey Taylor. Sweetwater led 18-11, 33-26 and 48-42 at the breaks after winning its three pool games.
SW girls lose finale
The Sweetwater girls fin-ished with a 2-2 record at Slaton’s tournament after losing to Whitharral 44-22 on Saturday. Sweetwater (14-9) trailed 18-0 after the first quarter and was down by 15, 26-11, at halftime.
Kendra Crosson had a team-high nine points but was one of only four Sweet-water players to score.
Kelsi Crosson had five points while Hayley Brown-low and Suede Shirley each had four points in the team’s second-lowest scoring game of the year. Sweetwater will tip off District 4-3A action Friday at Big Spring and will begin a two-game homestand Jan. 8 against Midland Greenwood. The first boys-girls district doubleheader will be Jan. 11 when they host Monahans.
