Sweetwater plays its first district basketball double-header today vs. Monahans at Mustang Gym, with the girls game at 6:15 p.m. and the boys contest at 7:30 as they tip off 4-3A action.
Two other Nolan County boys teams also begin dis-trict play tonight, as Roscoe goes to Ira while Highland will be playing at Loraine.
Sweetwater’s boys enter district on a seven-game roll, improving to 11-7 on Tuesday with a 60-58 win over San Angelo Lake View. The game appeared to be headed for overtime until Kaleb Hoover hit a tie-breaking layup as time ran out, just seconds after Lake View’s Ryan Chaney had hit a 3-pointer to tie the game and cap a rally from a 10-point deficit.
Hoover had 23 points and Rhett Torres (12) and Dylan Bennett (10) also hit double figures for the Mustangs, who will now face a tough Monahans team that is off to a 17-3 start after beating Denver City 76-57 in its last game on Monday.
Sweetwater’s girls, who are 1-1 in district, are facing a Monahans team off to an 0-2 start. Sweetwater lost to Greenwood 44-40 here Tuesday after losing a five-point fourth quarter lead and going scoreless over the final 3:08.
The loss to Greenwood knocked Sweetwater out of first-place tie. Greenwood and Wylie are both 2-0.
Shelby Cason scored 11 points and Kelsi Crosson 10 for the Lady Mustangs (15-10 overall), who lost for the third time in their last four games.
