In addition to death and taxes, there is at least one other thing you can count on: the Highland girls basketball team in the playoffs.
Highland (7-0 in District 13-A, 24-3 overall) wrapped up its 12th straight postseason trip on Friday by annihilating Ira, 93-36, in Ira.
Four Lady Hornets hit double figures, led by Beth Richburg’s 22 points and Sierra Allen’s 19. Hannah Allen had 12 points, while Madison Moseley had 10.
Sydny Helbert had nine points, Kaylee Martin six, Lora Stewart five, Stephan-ie Ashford four and Morgan Monroe three.
Highland’s win over Ira and Roscoe’s 53-29 victory over Westbrook moved the Plowgirls — who are 5-2 in district and 16-10 overall — into outright second place. Ira is 4-3 and Westbrook’s record fell to 3-4.
Faith Boren scored 18 points, Carolina Perez 13 and Eva Aguayo 10 to pace Roscoe. Also scoring for the Plowgirls were Stina Tom-lin with five points, Torrey Willman with four and Mir-ian Solis with three.
Roscoe’s boys got their first win in district play by beating Westbrook 62-47 as the Plowboys improved to 1-4 in district (4-13 season). Roscoe, which led 32-23 at halftime, was paced by Jes-us Leanos’ 32 points.
Dillon Freeman provided double-figure support by scoring 11 points while Kevin Lavalais scored nine, Shelton Tolliver four and Cutter Davila and Luke Rovig two each.
But it was a bad night for Highland’s boys, who went to first-place Ira Friday and lost, 76-29, falling to 3-2 in district and a game behind second-place Hermleigh (4-1). Brandon Stevens had nine points, Ethan Wilson eight, Michael Hyde four, Ron Covington and Kevin Box three and Seth Wood two for the Hornets.
