The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel in Texas is now $3.24, which is eight cents more than one week ago, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. Drivers in the Lone Star State are paying an average of 18 cents less than the national average which is now $3.42. People in Dallas are paying the most on average at $3.30, and people in El Paso are paying the least at $2.99. Sweetwater drivers are currently paying $3.29 per gallon.
Prices have risen largely because of higher oil prices impacted by positive economic news and recent regional refinery issues in Illinois, New Mexico, Texas, California and Washington State. Also, a refinery in New Jersey will close permanently by the end of February. Analysts say that refinery accounts for 7.5 percent of Northeast production and its closure will likely further squeeze already tight gas supplies in the Northeast and require additional product to be brought to the region from the Gulf Coast and overseas.
Over the last week average gasoline prices have gone up in almost every state. Retail prices in the Central U.S. have increased most dramatically, as the price of crude products used by refiners supplying these regions have risen.
“Although it appears as though gas prices are on the upswing, we’re still paying less today than one year ago,“ said AAA Texas/New Mexico Representative Doug Shupe. “In fact, the price we’re paying at the pump in Texas is 13 cents less than last year at this time.”
