Highland was a double winner Friday, as the girls advanced to the Class 1A, Division II regional quarterfinals by beating Zephyr while the boys knocked off Hermleigh for the No. 2 playoff seed in District 13-A, Division II.
The girls, who earned a bye for winning the 13-A title, defeated Zephyr 48-29 in an area playoff at Clyde.
Highland (28-4) was led by Sierra Allen, who had 16 points, and Hannah Allen, who scored 11. With the win, the Lady Hornets will take on Water Valley in the regional quarterfinals this week. The time, date and location of the playoff was not known at press time.
Beth Richburg had eight points while Sydny Helbert and Madison Moseley each had four, Kaylee Martin three and Lora Stewart two.
Highland grabbed a 10-4 lead after one quarter and the Lady Hornets increased their lead to nine, 20-11, by halftime and 14 (32-18) at the end of three periods.
The boys won 42-36, with Ethan Wilson scoring 17 points to lead the way and Kevin Box 10. Friday’s vic-tory means the Hornets will now face Robert Lee in the bi-district playoffs at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ballinger High School, Highland coach Logan Rawls said.
Brandon Stevens had four points while Ron Covington, Michael Hyde and Jacob Richburg had three points and Seth Wood two. High-land jumped out to a 15-8 lead after one quarter, but the Hornets managed just one point for the rest of the half, allowing Hermleigh to tie it 16-16 at halftime.
Highland led 28-23 after three periods, then fell behind 32-31 in the fourth before a 9-0 run finally al-lowed the Hornets to secure the win. Highland will en-ter the playoffs with a 15-14 record.
