Coming off one of its toughest losses of the still-young season, the Sweet-water High School baseball team began play at Abilene’s three-day tournament this morning against Abilene Cooper at Cooper’s field.
Sweetwater (6-5) lost at Andrews, 5-4, on Tuesday — a game Sweetwater led 4-0 after four innings.
Andrews tied it with a four-run fifth, however, and the host Mustangs won it by scoring off a Sweetwater error in the seventh follow-ing a walk and stolen base.
Sean Morrow had three hits and Dylan Bennett, Ste-phen May and J.P. Poe two for Sweetwater, which out-hit Andrews 13-4. Morrow’s RBI double gave Sweetwa-ter an early 1-0 lead over Andrews and Poe’s RBI single in the third made it 3-0. The Mustangs increased their lead to 4-0 when May singled in the fourth to score Bennett, who also singled.
But a double and two er-rors, plus a pair of walks, allowed Andrews to tie it in the bottom of the fourth before pushing across the winning run in the seventh. James Clift, Shawn Camp-bell, Kaleb Hoover and Gabriel Melendez also had hits for Sweetwater, which stranded 10 baserunners.
Poe (4 1/3) and Hayden Reeves (1 2/3) pitched and gave up just four hits and no earned runs.
“(Andrews) has a good ballclub,” said coach Roland Herrera. “But we’ve got to step it up and play better behind our pitchers and not make errors. We made too many mental mistakes.
“(This loss) was a hard one to swallow.”
After today’s game, the Mustangs play twice Friday as they face Abilene High at 10 a.m. and Wichita Falls at 1 p.m., then finish Saturday by playing at 1 p.m. against Wichita Falls Rider.
