Thanks to a second-place finish in the 148-pound weight class, Donald Baker is advancing to Abilene where he will represent the Sweetwater boys at the state powerlifting meet later this month.
Baker’s total lift in the three categories — squat, bench press and dead lift — at the regional meet held Saturday at Sundown High School was 1,085 pounds.
Baker, a senior, will be making his first appear-ance at the state meet.
Just missing out on a trip to the state meet with third-place finishes were Jay Lomas (910) in the 132-pound class and Austin Marlett (1,090) in the 165-pound class. Lomas actu-ally tied for the second-best total but lost a chance to advance due to a slightly higher body weight than that of Greenwood’s Cole Byerly, who was awarded the second-place regional medal in the weight class.
Both Lomas and Marlett will be state alternates by placing third.
Also, Kendall Rea (1,210) was fifth for Sweetwater in the 242-pound class and Steven Le (1,025) finished sixth in the 165-pound weight class. Trey Harvey also went to regionals in the 148-pound class but did not make weight.
This year’s boys state meet will be March 23.
Roscoe had two athletes at the Region I, Div. 3 meet in Sundown.
Jose Rangel placed third for Roscoe in the 165-pound class and is a state alternate after a lift of 1,165 pounds. Landon Jones also competed in the 181-pound class but did not score.
Sweetwater’s six athletes competed Saturday at the Region I, Division 2 meet in Sundown.
