Regional berths will be sought today by 15 Sweet-water High School athletes — nine girls and six boys — who are competing in the area track meet at Pecos.
Their goals are to secure a top-four finish and advance to the Region I-3A meet set for April 26-27 in Lubbock.
The boys will be led by Nick Nemir, who has qualified to compete in four events for the Mustangs — the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, long jump and as a member of the 400-meter relay — and is trying for his third straight trip to the regional meet.
Jonathan Browning, Jay Lomas and Isaiah McGee are the other runners on the 400 relay. Also competing for Sweetwater are McGee in the 200 dash, Kaleb Hoover in the 400 dash and Deandre Gatson in the triple jump.
Hoover qualified for reg-ionals as part of the 800 relay last year.
All nine of Sweetwater’s girls are trying for their first regional appearance.
Competing are two relays — the 800 relay of Kelsi Crosson, Kendra Crosson, Abby Garcia and Suede Shirley as well as the 1600 relay of Kendra Crosson, Mickenzie Brownlow, Shirley and Marissa Sanchez. Shirley in the 200, Kayla Chowning in the high jump, Zanesha Collins in the discus and Cierra Knox in the shot put will also compete.
