It takes a lot to stop a good cause.
The Nolan County United Way Halloween on the Green may have started out rainy, but it didn't end that way.
Teams had their tee-time pushed back a couple of hours, but once they got started nothing was stopping them. There were a total of 16 teams playing for the cause.
Sponsored teams were: First Financial Bank made up of Kirby Andrews, Mason Andrews, Rodney Foster and Mark Garcia; M & K Solutions made up of Cooper Smartt, Marc Tucker, Sky Tucker and Britton Pittman; Smartt Move made up of B.J. Smartt, Billy Smartt, Terry Pittman and Jay Moore; Tolan Smith Construction made up of Pio Munoz, Jimmy Moses, Edward Morales and Kade Betts; Roscoe State Bank made up of Jared Monday, Tyler Murphree, T.J. Wilson and Kyle Seaton; Big Country Electric made up of Todd Henderson, Hunter Tolbert, Todd Coker and Jeff Upshaw.
Unsponsored teams were made up of Eddie Asbill, Warren Haynee, Larry Hillis, Frank Wright; Michael Longoria, Robert Vasquez, Sr., Robert Vasquez, Jr., Juan DeLeon; Geary Williams, Kim Williams, Bobby Klatt, Clay Klatt; Tom Henderson, Freddy Creed, Bill Clark, Tere Lawrence; Reagan Shackelford, Bennie Meneses, Ronnie Linebaugh and George Underwood.
There was a chance for a 50/50 $10,000 hole-in-one prize, which was sponsored by First Financial Bank and First Financial Trust. Teams were competing for golf attire, gift cards and golf equipment and supporting a good cause, in the process.
There were a few close calls, but no winner for the hole-in-one. Even though nobody made a whole in one, four teams showed their skill and came out on top. The first place team, sponsored by Big County Electric, received Titleist cart bags. The team was made up of Todd Coker, Todd Henderson, Hunter Tolbert and Jeff Upshaw. The second place team was sponsored by Smartt Move and consisted of BJ Smartt, Billy Smartt, Jay Moore and Terry Pittman. They took home Titleist Vokey Wedges. The Country Club Crew, made up of Eddie Asbill, Warren Haynee, Larry Hillis and Frank Wright, took home new F Golf Shirts. Tom Henderson, Freddy Creed, Tere Lawrence and Bill Clark made up the fourth place team, taking home Titleist golf hats.
Prizes didn't end there. B.J. Smartt received a box of Titleist golf ball, donated by Allied Energy, for winning closest to the pin on hole #7. Freddy Creed received the title of closest to the pin, on hole #17, and received a $25 gift certificate donated by West Texas Golf. Sweetwater Regional Federal Credit Union sponsored hole #18, for closest to the pin. Todd Henderson won a $25 Visa gift card.
The United Way was able to gather $3,570, through the help and participation of the 26 community sponsors. The money raised will benefit the nine local organizations in Nolan County; Backpack Buddies, West Texas Child Advocacy Center, SNAP, Red Cross, Cancer Services Network, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Women's Resource Center and Gateway Services.
