The Sweetwater baseball team has played its share of exciting games this season. Four of the Mustangs’ five postseason games — and all four victories — have been decided by two runs or less.
Two of the most drama-tic finishes came in March against Andrews, which will play Sweetwater in a best-of-3 regional quarterfinal starting with Game 1 Friday at Lubbock Christian Uni-versity’s Hays Field. In both cases, the visiting team had a big early lead, only to see the home team rally and pull out a walk-off victory in the final inning.
Andrews won the first game 5-4 at Andrews, in a game Sweetwater led 4-0 after four innings. However, Andrews tied it with a four-run fifth and won by scoring off a Sweetwater error in the seventh following a walk and stolen base. That was the second loss in a season-high six-game losing streak for the Mustangs.
But Sweetwater got some revenge and ended its skid with a 7-6 win six days later at Sportsman’s Park.
The Mustangs were star-ing at a 6-0 deficit going to the bottom of the sixth until Sean Morrow hit a two-run homer to start the comeback. Morrow was also part of a double steal that tied it, and scored the game-winner on a bases-loaded walk.
