Sweetwater and Highland begin their 2010-11 girls basketball seasons against each other today. Highland, ranked No. 12 in Class 1A, Div. II by the Texas Associ-ation of Basketball Coaches, will host the season opener that tips off at 6:30 p.m. following a JV game at 5 p.m.
Sweetwater was 12-19 a year ago and 0-10 in district while Highland was 19-8 and advanced to the Class 1A playoffs as the second-place team in its district behind Roby. The Lady Hornets earned their lofty ranking based on the fact that all-region players Callie Sandusky and Kara Hughey are back for another year.
Sweetwater, though, also has many top players back and expects big improvement under Jerry McSherry, who has piled up 350 career victories in his 18 years as a head basketball coach.
Top returning players are senior post Taylor McKoy and junior post Alicia Finn, who earned honorable mention all-district recogition last year.
Two other Nolan County girls basketball teams who also hope for big improve-ment will also begin their seasons today. Roscoe (6-23 a year ago) will host Winters at 6:30 p.m. while Blackwell hosts TLC Academy starting at 6 p.m.
