Sweetwater’s Sportsman Park will play host today to the opening game of a best-of-3 regional baseball final between Bangs and Wall.
The teams will play Game 1 at 6:30 p.m. today, then relocate to Hunter Field in Abilene (Hardin-Simmons University) to play Game 2 at 5 p.m. Saturday. Game 3, if necessary, would begin 30 minutes following Game 2.
Bangs (25-8) finished as District 6-2A champion this season while Wall (32-4) was the third-place team in the same district. The Hawks lost both games in district play this season to the Dragons by scores of 7-6 and 13-3.
But Wall has rebounded from those setbacks to get on a roll in the playoffs as the Hawks have been 8-0, sweeping Alpine, Eastland, Henrietta and Childress.
Bangs’ baseball team hopes to duplicate its football team’s playoff success at Sweetwater last fall when the Dragons beat Idalou.
Bangs is in its fifth regional final but has yet to go to the state tournament, which will be at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. The Dragons needed three games to subdue Cisco and Holiday before a two-game sweep against Idalou.
In Class 3A, Stephenville and Lubbock Cooper open their best-of-three regional final at Hardin-Simmons with two games starting at 5 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, would be at noon Friday. In Class 1A, Stamford and Anson begin their regional final at McMurry University at 7 p.m. today; Game 2 will be Saturday at 5 p.m. at the same location, with Game 3, if necessary, to follow.
