ABILENE — Javier Olguin was a one-man wrecking crew Tuesday for Sweet-water’s Junior League All-Stars.
Olguin enjoyed a perfect night at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with a grand slam home run and eight RBIs, including a pair of two-run doubles plus an intentional walk in his other at bat.
But Sweetwater still came up short as it was eliminated, 16-13, by Abilene Eastern in the teams’ losers bracket semifinal of the District 5 tournament at Abilene Wylie’s field.
Eastern faces either Wylie or Abilene South in the losers bracket final today.
Sweetwater scored twice in the first inning on Olguin’s first double, then added three more runs on a bases-loaded triple by Hunter Mobley for a 5-0 lead entering the bottom of the second, only to see the lead evaporate when Eastern scored eight times in the bottom of the inning.
Eastern extended the lead to 10-5 when Olguin deliv-ered his grand slam homer in the fourth inning to cut it to 10-9. Olguin’s homer also scored Isak Alvarez and Junior Lawhon, who drew walks, and Mobley, who singled.
Olguin struck again in the sixth inning by getting his second double, which scored Lawhon and Mobley and cut Eastern’s lead to 14-11, but Sweetwater never got the lead back again.
Eastern scored its final two runs in the bottom of the frame to extend its lead to 16-11. Sweetwater put together a final rally in the seventh by scoring two runs, first on a bases-loaded throwing error and then on Mobley’s RBI single, but a rundown play on the bases ended the game.
John Clift, Alvarez, Matt Figueroa and Lawhon were Sweetwater’s pitchers.
