With no starters and only two lettermen — seniors Kayla Chowning and Mikki Reschman — coming back following a 24-win season, Sweetwater High School’s volleyball team will enter the 2013 campaign in full rebuilding mode.
Aly Heredia, Shaneese Brown, Lena Lovelady, Zig-gy Collins, Maddie Jones, Mikealah Foust, Morgan Gomez and either Kensi Chowning or Maddie Berry are the other members of the varsity squad, which starts its season with a 6:15 p.m. match Monday at San Angelo Grape Creek before a dual match at home with Water Valley and Seminole on the following day.
“We’re starting over,” said Liz Miller, entering her 11th year as head coach, prior to the team’s first scrimmage last Friday.
“We’re just going to try to get better each week and not get discouraged. We’ll just continue to work,” Miller said, adding, “I don’t hear any negative talk. (The players) are talking about making the playoffs, which is a step in the right direction. We’re going to work real hard to get one of those playoff spots.
“I’m excited, just because of how hard our players have worked (since practices began Aug. 5). The girls have encouraged me with their passion. I know it’s a small group, but everyone who is here wants to be here. You can tell by the look on their faces that they really want it. They are all competing and fighting for a spot, and that’s cool.
“We can’t be scared; we’ve got to be prepared. I’m look-ing at (the team’s situation) positively,” Miller said.
