The placing of junk, brush and/or debris in the alley and/or street right of way is littering and subject to a fine not to exceed $200 in addition to refuse surcharges to be applied.
Sweetwater residential refuse customers are allowed the use of the city's Type IV landfill for disposal of junk and debris at no additional charge. Also, residents can dispose of small quantities of brush, yard waste and cast-off furnishings, in addition to recycling metal, glass, cardboard, paper, tires and used "do-it-yourself" motor oil and filters at the Drop Off and Recycling Center (DOC) at no additional charge.
Residents who do not have a vehicle to haul their discarded material to the landfill or the DOC may utilize the Clean-Up and Recycling Truck Placement Program at no additional charge. This program allows residential refuse customers to load their cast-offs and presorted recyclable materials onto a city provided truck rather than disposing of these items improperly. Only items accepted at the local landfill are allowed to be placed on the clean up truck.
The Sweetwater Type IV Landfill, located at 3000 W. Alabama, is open from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The landfill accepts items such as construction and demolition waste, furniture, carpet, brush and yard waste. A container for metal recycling is also located on site. All loads must be tarped or otherwise secured per state law and customers must arrive early enough to unload and be out of the facility by the closing hour.
No household/putresibles (waste that has ever been associated with food or drink) are allowed. In addition, no special or hazardous wastes, such as batteries, anti-freeze or paint (including containers), tires, oil or oil filters and appliances with compressor units containing Freon are allowed at this landfill.
In-city residents hauling materials from their own home need only show a current water/refuse (city utility) billing stub at the landfill gate to confirm residential refuse customer status and to utilize the facility at no extra charge. Residents with small quantities and/or recyclable materials may utilize the Drop-off and Recycling Center (DOC) located at 801 W. Broadway. The DOC is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Residents that require use of the clean up and recycling truck may contact the City Services Department at 236-6313 or by contacting the Solid Waste Foreman at 235-5003.
