On October 19, 2019 the Nolan County American Heart Association hosted the annual Heart Walk to raise awareness for heart and stroke disease and raise funds for cardiovascular research and educational programs. This year’s event touched many local hearts as it was dedicated to Chief Jim Kelley and his family. Chief Kelley passed away in January of this year from cardiac complications, leaving behind a legacy for which he will be remembered by many.
The Heart Walk event kicked off at 10:00 am at the Sweetwater High School track with roughly 100 people in attendance. Prior to the kick-off, the Heart Association presented the Kelley family with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a plaque honoring Jim and his service to the community. Scharles Kelley and her son Paxton Kelley were in attendance with her other son Tanner Kelley being there in spirit as he could not attend.
Sponsors put together teams and had shirts made, businesses donated items such as a bounce house for the kids, a bouquet of flowers for Scharles and family, and a plaque all to honor Jim and show their support for his family.
