ACRE meetings set for May

SAN ANGELO – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will conduct three ACRE (Average Crop Revenue Election) workshops in Colorado City, Roscoe and Eden during May. Workshop particulars are: – May 11, 8:30 a.m. City National Bank’s Thompson Room located in Colorado City; $5 registration fee due on arrival. Those planning to attend should RSVP by May 10 by calling 325-728-3111.– May 11, 1 p.m., Roscoe Community Center. – May 17, 6:30 p.m. Eden Multi-Purpose Center. The Roscoe and Eden meetings will each have a $10 registration fee due upon arrival.    “ACRE uses a combination of state average yields, farm level yields and the national marketing year price to determine levels of revenue guarantees and payments for each covered commodity,” said Bill Thompson, AgriLife Extension economist at San Angelo. He said the speakers will give producers examples during the workshops so they can evaluate the potential safety net benefits of ACRE versus the program’s actual and potential costs. According to Thompson, only farms with covered commodity or peanut base acres are eligible to participate in the program. Speakers at the Colorado City meeting will be AgriLife Extension economists, Dr. Jackie Smith of Lubbock and Dr. Joe Outlaw of College Station. Outlaw will speak along with Thompson at the meeting in Roscoe, and Thompson will speak at the final meeting in Eden.Outlaw helped to develop the online ACRE producer decision aid that’s to be discussed during the meetings. Farm Services Agency personnel who administer the ACRE program will also be at each of the meetings.   For more information on the ACRE program, call Thompson at 325-653-4576.
