Two area six-man legends are now San Angelo area head football coaches after being hired during this past offseason to bring that success to their new teams.
Highland’s Karry Owens is at Robert Lee after spending most of the past eight years as Highland’s principal before retiring in 2017, six years after his last of 18 seasons there as the head football coach who took two teams to the state finals. He was also a star player on state champion Highland teams in 1982 and 1983.
Blackwell’s Nathan Hayes twice led Crowell to a state championship as a coach in 2013 and 2014. Before that, he was a star player who as a senior at Blackwell was on one of the school’s most successful teams in history and then returned to coach at Blackwell prior to his two state titles at Crowell.
