Banyard misses final cut, makes practice squad again

Joe Banyard’s career with the Minnesota Vikings will continue, just not on the team’s active roster.Banyard, a former star running back at Sweetwater High School and University of Texas-El Paso, failed to make the Vikings’ 53-man roster when the final cuts were announced Saturday. However, on Sunday it was announced he had been signed as one of eight members on the practice squad, where he spent the last part of the 2012 season as a member of the Vikings.Banyard’s NFL preseason rushing stats were the most impressive of any Minne-sota player, but he was left off in favor of Adrian Peter-son, Toby Gerhart, Matt Asiata and Zach Line. But by staying with the team’s practice squad, Ban-yard can move seamlessly onto the active roster if an injury occurs to one or more of the other four backs. In four pre-season games, Banyard led the Vikings with 123 yards on 26 carries and one TD, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. He also had nine catches for 63 yards and a TD. In his final game, he led the team in rushing with 62 yards and also had a team-high seven catches for 54 yards plus a TD as the Vikings outlasted the Tennessee Titans 24-23 for their only preseason win.
