Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame is celebrating 15 years

The Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame is celebrating its 15th year of honoring Big Country athletes, coaches, referees and media. With the inclusion of the Class of 2016, there are now 138 members of the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame, an impressive group that includes four members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, several members of college halls of fame, a number of Olympians, a Masters champion, former and some current NFL, NBA and major league baseball players, numerous state champion athletes and coaches and the most decorated athlete in the history of the University Interscholastic League – all of whom called the Big Country their home. This year the Hall of Fame will again give 12 $1,000 college scholarships to graduating senior athletes from the Big Country bringing the total scholarships given to approximately $40,000. The Hall of Fame is a tax-exempt 501c3 organization. The museum is located at One AISD Center, 241 Pine Street in downtown Abilene.
This year The Hall will induct Johnny Agan, Albany; Bonnie Buchanan Gray, May; Kenneth Cleveland (posthumously), Coleman; Sonny Cumbie, Snyder; Brandon Hawk, Clyde and Kim Bartee Neece of Albany. The Powell Berry family, Snyder and Abilene, is the Legacy Award winner; and Al Pickett, Abilene, will be the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement for Media award. Also for the third year of the "Bill Hart Memorial Legends" category, Dr. William "Dub" Sibley and Margaret Ellison will be recognized.
The annual induction banquet will be Monday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the Abilene Civic Center. Tickets are $60 each for general seating and can be purchased online at or by calling 325-668-3685.
