SAN ANGELO — Blackwell held a one-point lead over Eden entering the third period of their Region II-1A girls area playoff Friday.
Then the Lady Hornets asserted themselves with a game-changing 21-7 run as they advanced with a 55-46 victory — their 20th — to face Garden City in the next round. The game will be at 8 p.m. Monday at the same location, Angelo State University’s Junell Center.
Blackwell (20-11) received double-figure scoring from three of its players.
Kiley Cummings led the way with 14 points, while Madison Solis had 12 and Jadyn Feitshans 10. Emilee Sanderson, the team’s top scorer this season, contributed nine points. Also scoring points for Blackwell were Cirstyn Gober with six and Vickie Davis and Shelby Panzer with two.
Garden City (32-1), which is ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, defeated Eula in its Region II-1A area round matchup Friday. The Lady Bearkats advanced to the playoffs as the No. 1 seed from District 14-1A, Blackwell’s district, and won both of the teams’ games, including on Feb. 6 when Garden City defeated Blackwell — the No. 3 seed in 14-1A — 51-35 to end the regular season.
But the Lady Hornets made some history by beating Eden. This marks the first time in 25 years that a Blackwell girls basketball team has gotten this far in the playoffs, dating back to the regional tournament team in 1993.
