VALERA — Blackwell entered the playoffs on a disappointing note after losing to Veribest 51-48 on Feb. 5. The loss put Veribest (10-2) and Robert Lee (9-3) ahead of Blackwell in the final District 11-1A standings, dropping Blackwell (9-3) to the No. 3 playoff berth.
The team probably feels much better now after routing Rochelle, 70-19, in its bi-district game that was played Tuesday at Valera Panther Creek High School. The Lady Hornets, who are in the playoffs for the third consecutive season, now advance to face Marfa in the Class 1A area playoffs later this week. Further details about that game will come in the near future.
Blackwell (22-8) had its second-highest point total of the year. Kiley Cummings led the Lady Hornets with 18 points. Madison Solis also reached double figures with 12 points while Jadyn Feitshans had nine, Emilee Sanderson eight, Darrian Kenney seven, Carli Powers six, Cirstyn Gober four, Vickie Davis three, Caitlin Lange two and Jordan Jones one.
Playing in 11-1A definitely prepared the team for the playoffs, coach Bud Halfmann said. “It was brutal every night,” he said of the district. “There were no nights off.”
In addition to the Lady Hornets, Veribest and Robert Lee were in the top 25 statewide poll in Class 1A most of the season.
“The Veribest loss was really disappointing and the district title was one of our goals,” the Blackwell coach said. “But our ultimate goal from day one has been the regional tournament. We have a tough path to get there, but we still have a shot.”
Prior to the Lady Hornets’ win Tuesday, Robert Lee beat Menard 60-26 to start the playoff doubleheader at Panther Creek.
