ABILENE — In his first trip to Taylor County Expo Center for the Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet, Sweetwater senior Justin Castereno on Saturday won a fourth-place state medal with personal bests in all three categories en route to a personal-best 1.615-pound total.
Castereno had the third-best total, but took fourth place despite finishing in a tie with Burnet’s Roger Craig in the 242-pound weight class. Craig took the third-place medal over Castereno by having a lower body weight of .2 pounds — 240 to 240.2 for Castereno — at the state meet.
Kristian Little of Tyler Chapel Hill beat out Jack Fontenot of Bridge City for first place — even though both lifted 1,700 pounds — for the same reason.
Castereno had individual lifts of 630 pounds in the squat, 405 pounds in the bench press and 580 pounds in the dead lift on Saturday, all three lifts exceeding his previous best in each category.
He will now look forward to his next big athletic challenge, also in Abilene, where he will play football for Hardin-Simmons University starting this fall following high school graduation.
Sweetwater powerlifting coach Blake Spears praised Castereno’s effort on Saturday.
“I’m proud of Justin and everything he’s done,” said Spears. “I look forward to seeing his accomplishments at HSU.”
