Drive for United Way set for Saturday

It's almost time to tee-off for a good cause. The Nolan County United Way 2011 summer golf tournament — Drive for United Way — is set for Saturday, Aug. 13 at the Sweetwater Country Club. The tournament starts at 8 a.m. to a shotgun start. With the fast approach of the summer tournament there is still a need for hole and prize sponsors. Sponsorships are available for $100. Sponsors will receive their name in the newspaper and on a hole during the tournament. “Becoming a "Drive for United Way" hole sponsor is a fun and easy way to show your support for NCUW and our 10 local agencies,” Wendy Smartt, NCUW executive director, said. At this point there are over 20 local businesses sponsoring holes including: First Financial Bank, First Financial Trust, Smartt Move, Fluid Transports, Lions Club, Rees, Rees, & Fuller, Family RV, Lawrence Management, Morgan Real Estate, Rolling Plains Clinic, Ludlums, Rolling Plains Hospital, Texas National Bank, Dandy Western Wear, Sweetwater TA, Sweetwater Regional Federal Credit Union, Wetsel & Carmichael, Maloney, McCoy Funeral Home, Roscoe State Bank and Eaker Family Medicine, TSTC, WETS, Bewleys Paint and Body Shop, 3A Glass and Construction, E.ON and Dale Martin & Sons. Last year's tournament had 28 sponsors and this year the board is looking to obtain, at least, 30 sponsors. On top of sponsors, donations and contributions are being accepted to help with prizes, snacks and other expenses. Money raised from the tournament will benefit the 10 local agencies; American Red Cross, Back Packs for Kids, Boy Scouts, Cancer Services Network, Gateway Family Services, Girl Scouts, SNAP, West Texas Children's Advocacy Center, Women's Resource Center and Big Country Medical Reserve Core. “All of these agencies serve a vital need in our community,” Smartt said. “The money we are able to provide them with allows them to continue serving the community.”For those wanting to compete in Drive for United Way, there is still time to sign up. Registration with mulligans for a team of four is $280 and without mulligans is $240. For individual players with mulligans is $70 and $60 without. Prizes will be awarded for first through fourth place teams. There are also four holes, 2, 17, 14 and 7, with added bonuses. “On top of helping local organizations and those in need in the community, you have the opportunity to win cash, a vacation and numerous other prizes,” Smartt said. For the second year in a row, First Financial Bank and First Financial Trust are sponsoring the hole in one — available on all par three holes. Players will be provided with a light breakfast, boxed lunch and drinks throughout the morning. “Nolan County United Way is committed to mobilizing the caring power of the community so show your support by sponsoring a hole, a team, or an individual in this year's Drive for United Way Golf Tournament,” Smartt said.
