A pair of ex-Sweetwater High School and current collegiate golfers, Kensi Chowning and Michael Hunt, played in the West Texas Junior Open this past Wednesday and Thursday at Abilene Country Club.
Chowning took first place in the collegiate women’s division after firing rounds of 76 and 77 for a 153 total to finish nine shots ahead of second-place Jaci Trotter of Santo, who shot consecutive 81s to finish at 162.
Chowning, a 2017 SHS graduate, now plays for Angelo State University and competed in a total of four tournaments during her freshman season at ASU.
Hunt, a 2016 graduate of SHS and sophomore member of the McMurry University men’s golf team, placed a very close fifth in the college men’s division at Abilene with a 150 total.
Hunt took the lead after the first round with a 73, but was three shots behind the leaders after his final-round 77. The division was won by Zane Brooks of Ranger, who shot 74-73-147 and won a playoff against Abilene’s Bobby Johnson.
Hunt played nine tournaments with 22 rounds at McMurry this season. His best finish was second place at the NCCAA Central Regional, the team’s second event of the season, shooting 71-69-75 for a 215 total, one under par. He also had a top-10 finish at the UMHB Fall Invitational, where he placed eighth with rounds of 73 and 75 to finish at 148.
