A fatal shooting occurred on Sunday morning in Sweetwater. According to Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda, shortly after 11 a.m. a report was received of a shooting and subsequent motor vehicle crash in the 1100 block of Fowler Street with the vehicle coming to a stop on 12th Street just west of Fowler Street.
An altercation was alleged to have taken place with at least one shot fired and one individual suffering from a gunshot wound. The individual suffering from the gunshot attempted to flee the scene and was involved in a single vehicle crash. The individual was removed from the vehicle and transported via ambulance to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital where the individual was pronounced dead. "The investigation continues and additional details will be made available as we can release them," said Frieda.
Tanner Engel, the alleged shooter, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Frieda stated that the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge against Engel could be increased, decreased or remain the same depending on what the investigation reveals.
Details are in the process of being investigated by members of the Sweetwater Police Department and the Texas Rangers.
