Hate and gun violence erupted anew over the weekend as 20 people were killed and more than two dozen wounded in a shooting in El Paso, Texas. A 21-year-old suspect from Allen, a suburb of Dallas, has been arrested.
President Trump has ordered that all American flags at the White House and government buildings be flown at half staff in memory of the shooting victims over the weekend in El Paso, Texas and in Dayton, Ohio.
“Our Nation mourns with those whose loved ones were murdered in the tragic shootings … and we share in the pain and suffering of all those who were injured in these two senseless attacks,” the president said in a proclamation in response to the shooting.
“Today’s shooting in El Paso, Texas, was not only tragic, it was an act of cowardice. I know that I stand with everyone in this Country to condemn today’s hateful act. There are no reasons or excuses that will ever justify killing innocent people,” Trump tweeted Saturday night.
Governor Greg Abbott held a press conference near the site of the shooting. “Lives were taken who should still be with us today,” Governor Abbott said at a news conference near the Walmart where the shooting took place.
The Texas Governor issued a proclamation on the shooting. “The El Paso community was struck by a heinous and senseless act of violence today. Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrific shooting and to the entire community in this time of loss. As such, it is fitting that flags should be lowered immediately to half-staff in memory of those who lost their lives. Therefore, pursuant to Chapter 3100 of the Texas Government Code, I direct the Texas flag be immediately lowered to half-staff statewide on Saturday, August 3, 2019, in memory of those who lost their lives. Flags should remain at half-staff through sunset on Thursday, August 8, 2019. Flags should be returned to full- staff on the following day. Individuals, businesses, municipalities, counties, and other political subdivisions and entities are encouraged to fly their flags at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of honor and respect. The First Lady and I extend our prayers of comfort to the survivors and the families of the victims and we will continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers. Respectfully, Greg Abbott, Governor.”
In Dayton, Ohio, a masked gunman wearing a bullet-proof vest and hearing protection, opened fire with a .223 caliber high-capacity rifle that held 100 round drum magazines. Within 30 seconds of opening fire, law enforcement was able to advance towards the perimeter and kill the gunman. 27 were wounded by the gunman in that incident.
