HAWLEY — Sweetwater stayed with Graham in the early part of Game 1 of the teams’ best-of-3 bi-district playoff series.
However, the Lady Blues were just too much, as they won Thursday’s game 8-3.
Sweetwater will try to avoid a sweep in Game 2 of the series at Hawley at 7:30 p.m. today. A third game — also at Hawley — would be Saturday if needed at a yet-to-be-determined time.
Sweetwater (15-9-1) never caught up after Graham went up 3-0 with the help of a two-run homer by Nicole King in the third inning.
However, Sweetwater did score twice in the bottom of the third on an RBI triple by Tavis Black and an RBI single by Sonora Medellin to cut the lead to 3-2 before the Lady Blues pulled away by scoring a total of five runs over the next two innings.
Blake Bewley had three hits for Sweetwater, which also got a run in the sixth inning when Medellin led off with a single and scored on a wild pitch. But the Lady Mustangs couldn’t muster any more runs after that off Emma Southerland, Graham’s pitcher, who got a complete-game win.
Kara Lehnert and Elli Lehnert took the mound for Sweetwater, with Kara going the first four innings and Elli the final three. They gave up 10 hits, while the Lady Mustangs had seven in Thursday’s contest.
Coach Alex Fuentez said Sweetwater couldn’t get the hits often enough when it mattered. “We’re planning to come back with the same game plan and hit the ball better and play better,” the Lady Mustangs’ first-year mentor said.
