Highland, Blackwell are tournament runnerups

Both the Highland girls and Blackwell boys came away with second-place finishes at their respective tournaments which ended on Saturday.The Highland girls and boys hosted their annual Hilltop Classic which also included the Roscoe boys and girls. The Plowboys won third place by beating Highland on Saturday, while the Plowgirls won the consolation title.Highland’s girls (7-7) reeled off consecutive victories at their tournament against Rotan (56-29), Garden City (53-23) and Robert Lee (52-44) before losing to Sands 46-43 in the championship game. Highland led 32-28 after three periods, but couldn’t hold on as Sands won the fourth quarter 18-11.The Roscoe girls (5-7) lost to Sands 26-25 and Robert Lee 35-29 in pool play before knocking off Rotan 29-24 on Saturday in the consolation final.On the boys side, Ros-coe and Highland wound up playing each other for third place. The Plowboys won, 53-8, after losing to 56-34 to eventual champion Wylie JV in the semifinals earlier in the day. Wylie’s JV, which also defeated Highland 90-16 in pool play, had a much tougher time in Saturday’s championship game but still came out on top as they beat Sands 49-47.The Roscoe boys (5-4) opened with a 54-31 loss to Sands on Thursday, but then rebounded for a 53-42 win over Robert Lee to reach the semifinals.The Highland boys (1-11) picked up their first win of the 2010-11 season by knocking off Rotan, 37-17, on Thursday. But after that it was all downhill as the Hornets lost to Wylie’s JV in their second pool game Friday and to Sands, 70-17, on Saturday, before their third-place game with Roscoe.Callie Sandusky scored 17 points and Sierra Allen 10 for the Highland girls against Rotan; Allen had 12 and Kara Hughey 11 against Garden City; San-dusky had 20 and Hughey 19 against Robert Lee; and Sandusky and Allen shared high-point honors with 12 and Hughey added 11 points in the championship game against Sands.For Roscoe’s girls, Sara Kingston had eight points against Sands; Kim Norris had 11 against Robert Lee; and Kingston had 13 against Rotan in Saturday’s consolation final. Cody Graham scored 14 points and Devan Cole and Caden Smith 10 for Roscoe to pace the Plowboys’ win over Highland, while the Hornets got four points from Josh Andrews. Keeston Ford had a team-high 11 points and Smith scored 10 for Roscoe in the Plowboys’ loss to the Wylie JV in Saturday’s semifinals.Smith was the top scorer for Roscoe in its other two tournament games. He had 15 points in the team’s opener against Sands, and scored 18 while Graham had 14 against Robert Lee in the second pool game.The Blackwell boys are now 7-7 after a second-place finish at their weekend tournament that was played at Lohn.The Blackwell girls also played at Lohn, but their tournament results were not available at press time today. The Blackwell boys won’t play again until they travel to Ira on Friday, while the girls start district today by entertaining Veribest. The Highland girls also start district play today with a home game against Hermleigh. All of the other boys and girls teams from Nolan County will wait until after Christ-mas to begin district play, starting with the Highland boys, whose district opener is Dec. 31 against Ira.Blackwell’s boys reached the title game at Lohn with three straight wins as they defeated Santa Anna 46-39, Paint Rock 38-32 and Lohn 60-39 before losing to May 28-22 in the title game. The Hornets outscored May 7-3 in the final period but couldn’t overcome a 25-15 deficit after three quarters. Caleb Magness had 12 points against May to pace Blackwell’s effort, and both he and Caleb Jeter were named to the all-tournament team.In Blackwell’s win over Lohn, Jeter had 24 points and Magness 20; Magness had a team-high 14 points against Paint Rock and Jeter 13; and Magness had 23 points in the opener against Santa Anna while Jeter scored 13 points.
