Hoover hits 28, but SW boys fall

SAN ANGELO — The Sweetwater boys basket-ball team got a great in-dividual scoring effort from Kaleb Hoover in its final non-district game on Tuesday as the 6-2 sophomore torched San Angelo Lake View for 28 points. But he was vir-tually a one-man crew, as the Mustangs came away with a 44-29 loss.Sweetwater (9-14) was able to stay close until Lake View (7-14) pulled away down the stretch after leading the Mustangs by just three points near the end of the third period.Besides Hoover, who just missed tying his season-high of 29 points, the only Sweetwater player to score was Taylor Jones, whose free throw got the Mustangs within 28-25 in the third stanza. But a 16-4 finish allowed the Chiefs to claim their third straight win while sending Sweetwater to its second straight loss after a 4-1 stretch in late December and the first part of January.Hoover had 10 points by the end of the first quarter, 18 at halftime and scored the first three Sweetwater baskets of the third quarter before Jones’ free throw with 3:01 remaining ended his run. Hoover made 12 of 17 field goals and all four of his free throws in a remarkable shooting performance, and also had nine rebounds, but his teammates were 0-for-26 from the field.Sweetwater starts Dis-trict 5-3A play by hosting Wylie — ranked No. 22 in the state — on Friday.
