A district title was decided the last time Highland and Blackwell got together on the football field.
However, all the winner of today’s game in Highland gets is bragging rights over the other Nolan County school for this year.
That’s enough, of course, for Class 1A, Division II Blackwell and Highland, which starting this year has moved up a notch to play in Class 1A, D-I. The teams had one of the better games in their long series last year as Blackwell won 35-34 on a TD pass from quarterback Brandon Brinkman to Joe Sanchez with 37 seconds left to play. The victory gave Blackwell the District 7-1A, D-II championship while Highland was the district runnerup and No. 2 seed.
This year, both teams are off to 1-0 starts for their non-district game at 7:30 p.m.
Blackwell’s Hornets celebrated homecoming with a come-from-behind 52-40 win over Eden in their opener, while Highland’s Hornets also had a tough game before defeating Grady 32-28 on the road to begin their season. Tonight will be the home opener for Highland.
