Improved Tors come to S’water

The successful transition under Ben McGehee is still evident five games in for the Sweetwater football team.
Friday, the 5-0 Mustangs host Lamesa at the Bowl with a 5-0 record (1-0 district) after pulling away to beat Pecos 63-30 in their 2-4A opener. Daniel Avila ran for 218 yards and three TDs and Chris Thompson threw TD passes to Kobe Clark, Andrew Melendez and Kaden Garrett.
Sweetwater trailed 23-20 until outscoring Pecos 43-7 the second half, handing the Eagles (4-1) their first loss of the season.
Lamesa won just one game in 2016 and none the year before that, but is 3-1 this season. The three wins came over Dimmitt (43-13), Lubbock Roosevelt (49-12) and Slaton (49-21) for its new coach Rodney Sims.
