HERMLEIGH — No. 3-ranked Iowa Park left no doubt about its superiority despite a late change in venue to Hermleigh for Game 2 of its bi-district, best-of-3 baseball playoff series with Sweetwater on Saturday.
After winning the opener 11-0 in Iowa Park on Thursday, the Hawks rolled to a 12-0 win to advance to the area round.
Sweetwater — which made the playoffs for the seventh straight year by getting the No. 4 seed in District 5-4A — was again forced into catch-up mode early and the Mustangs once again couldn’t generate enough offense to produce any runs. Sweetwater had just three hits — singles by Reese Palafox and Tyler Warner and a double by Gavin Reyes. Mathew Hernandez also reached with a walk in the fifth inning after Reyes’ double, and Rylen Moncada drew a walk after Warner’s single in the sixth, but the Mustangs were unable to get anyone past second base.
Palafox also reached on an error in the first inning and moved to second on Leo Holsey’s groundball out before being stranded.
Hernandez is the only senior on a very young Sweetwater team that figures to show noticeable improvement in the near future. Iowa Park led 4-0 after one inning, 6-0 after two and the Hawks added to their run total in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
