Iva Jo Cooper

Iva Jo Cooper, formerly of Sweetwater, Texas passed away at a Weatherford  nursing home on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at age of 86. Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at Cotten-Bratton Chapel in Weatherford, Texas. Internment will be at Buckner Cemetery near Dennis, Texas. John Herington, Minister of North Main Church of Christ will be officiating.She was born Sept. 29, 1924, in Coleman, Texas to Jimmy Lee and Barbara Allen VanDyke. She graduated from Coleman High School in 1942. Prior to her marriage she worked at McCullough Air Training Center and Cobb Insurance Company in Coleman. She married Austin F. Cooper, of Dennis, Texas Feb. 28, 1952 in Coleman. They lived in several Texas towns following his career as a Telegrapher for Santa Fe Railroad. They moved to Sweetwater in 1959. They were the parents of two children. In Sweetwater, she worked as a sales clerk for Thornton’s and Bealls Department Stores and as an Avon Representative. She was a member of the First National Bank, Dairy Queen and Whataburger Coffee Drinkers Associations. She worshiped at 4th and Elm Church of Christ prior to her move to Weatherford in 2008.   Her husband, Austin Cooper preceded her in death Sept. 10, 1993; her parents Jimmy Lee and Barbara VanDyke, a brother, J. L VanDyke, and a sister, Udell Thompson and her husband Charles Thompson. Survivors are her children, Cathy Tatom, and partner Kurt Schafer of Sweetwater, Keith Cooper of Buda; grandchildren, Tasha Harrell and husband, Jay of Cedar Creek, Jarrick Cooper of Bandera, Maigan Isbell and husband Christopher of  Waxahachie, Misty Newton and husband Brian of San Marcus; eight great-grandchildren; seven nieces, three nephews, numerous great nieces and  nephews; one sister, Marge Mercer, husband Worth of Bolivia, NC; two sisters-in-law, Wynona Cooper of Lake Ridge, VA, and Ila Mae Cooper of Weatherford Texas; and numerous cousins and  friends in the Coleman, Sweetwater and the West Texas area.
