Josephine “Jo” Hill Henderson

Born on Nov. 18, 1952, Josephine “Jo” Hill Henderson was a lifelong resident of Sweetwater, Texas. She was the fifth generation of the Newman ranching family that first settled in Fisher County in 1879. Josephine completed her circle of life at home on June 28, 2014.Jo was a graduate of the Sweetwater High School Class of 1970. She played tennis for the Mustang Tennis Team for four years and was the cartoonist for the school newspaper, The Pony Express. After graduation, she attended Trinity University in San Antonio. Jo was employed by the Nolan County Clerk’s Office, the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and in the family agriculture business. She was also a board member of the Sweetwater Pioneer Museum. Jo was also involved with the PEO and Sip ‘n Sew organizations.She met and married Tom Henderson of Altus, Oklahoma in her grandparent’s home in Sweetwater on Nov. 16, 1974. They were blessed with one daughter, Hillary Jane in September 1985. She is survived by her husband, Tom of Sweetwater, Texas, her loving spouse of 39 1/2 years; her daughter Hillary Jane Pitts and husband Ryan Pitts of Wewoka, Oklahoma; cousins Austin Davis of Sweetwater, Texas, Richard Davis of Sweetwater, Texas, many cousins, nieces and nephews in Texas, Oklahoma, and Illinois, her FAVSIL, Trisha Crosswhite of Hennessey, Oklahoma as well as many, many dear friends in Sweetwater and Oklahoma. Jo was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Harley Jane Pitts of Wewoka, Oklahoma; her parents, Paul and Margaret Hill of Sweetwater, Texas; Bryce and Mary Henderson of Altus, Oklahoma; her grandparents Mose and Margaret Newman of Sweetwater, Texas and her great-grandparents, J.F. and Josephine Newman of Sweetwater, Texas.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pioneer Museum 610 E. 3rd Street Sweetwater, Texas 79556 or the WASP Museum, P.O. Box 456, Sweetwater, Texas 79556.Services will be at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 2 p.m. under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
