New coach Tim Scherwin makes his debut Tuesday when Sweetwater’s softball team plays host to Stanton at 5:30 p.m. in its 2019 season opener. And he has the makings of a good team.
“It’s been positive,” he said of the adjustment process. “Our chemistry has been pretty good so far. We have a lot of leadership.
“Our seniors have adopted the vision that we’re trying to accomplish,” Scherwin said.
“The biggest thing we want is to provide stability and increase our accomplishments. We will have nine returning varsity members and I think we have a good chance to compete well in district.”
Six of the returning players — Tavis Black, Bri Moriel, Blayke Bewley, Kara Lehnert, Jazzy Villa and Emerald Torres — got all-district honors last year.
Black will be the team’s shortstop after she finishes playing basketball for the playoff-bound Lady Mustangs. She will be playing softball for Cisco Junior College next year. In addition, Moriel is a starting infielder and Villa is back at third base. Bewley will be starting in the outfield and Torres at catcher. Lehnert will be one of the primary pitchers for Sweetwater again along with sister Elli. Also in the rotation will be a freshman, Sara Vera.
First base candidates are Kaci Webb, Kyla Daniel, Annisa McCollom and Mia Valdez. Moriel will be at either second base or shortstop. Marlee Hicks, Elli Lehnert and Nikki Gutierrez will also play at second base and Webb plays third base as well.
The other outfield candidates are Daniel, Gutierrez, Valdez, Victoria Neri and Nevaeh Sarabia. McCollom and Neri will also get playing time at catcher.
